LEARN ABOUT RMP

MISSION

Ruby Mountain Project is an evolving collaboration of artists, residents, and community members rooted in the integration of art, connection, and land stewardship. It supports a diverse, climate-resilient habitat while serving as a land-based creative hub where local and international communities come together through meaningful shared experiences. With an embodied connection to the land and the thoughtfully designed, welcoming spaces, Ruby Mountain Project offers programming, events and gatherings that foster connection, creativity, and care for both people and place.

VALUES

  • RMP fosters community, reciprocity, and meaningful connections, both locally and internationally

  • RMP prioritizes creating supportive spaces for marginalized artists to flourish

  • RMP creates spaces that foster a sense of belonging through care, intention, and presence

  • RMP acts from an embodied, grounded connection to land, elements, and self

  • RMP honors the intelligence of the Mojave desert ecology while investing in long-term climate resilience and thriving native habitats

DIVERSITY, EQUITY, ACCESSIBILITY AND INCLUSION

Ruby Mountain Project is dedicated to cultivating an inclusive and welcoming environment for artists, residents, and visitors of all backgrounds and identities, including BIPOC, LGBTQIA2S+, disabled, and other historically underrepresented communities. We are committed to creating spaces rooted in care, accessibility, and belonging, and we continually evolve our programs, structures, and community practices through ongoing dialogue, reflection, and feedback from those who share the space.

THE LAND

We are located on the traditional, ancestral, and unceded territory of the Maarenga'yam (Serrano) and Mojave peoples. These groups are the original stewards of the high desert and nearby mountain regions since time immemorial and they continue to hold deep, ongoing cultural and spiritual connections to this region. Visit the Morongo Nation website to learn more.

Ruby Mountain Project exists within the magical Mojave desert at 3300 feet above sea level with a 360 degree view of mountains, valleys, and mesas which change shape in the shifting light. RMP is named after Ruby Mountain which is the nearest peak at just 2.5 miles away and 4,337 feet above sea level.

The parcel features thriving native and endemic plant and animal species as well as numerous edible and ornamental botanical specimens. A pair of resident ravens call it home as well as a nesting pair of barn owls who have been returning for the last 10 years.

Previously known as the Hi Lo Homestead, most of the space as it looks now was stewarded by Meika, Prescott and family. Along with many creative and skilled friends, they cleaned up a neglected property full of junk and transformed it into a delightful art and sustainability project. Most materials were salvaged from the property or are reclaimed building materials sourced nearby.

Elizabeth took over stewardship in early 2026, and with friends and family began repairs and additions for the continuation of the land based art project.

We are in the unincorporated community of Landers, CA. It is a quiet area with near daily blue skies, extraordinary sunsets and incredibly dark skies. Just 2 hours from Los Angeles, the surrounding area of Morongo basin is known for a thriving and expanding art scene with world class artists, galleries, art fairs, music festivals, and artist residency programs.
